Welcome

Turn the Great British clock of farming back about a hundred years and what would you find?

You’d find a landscape of traditional farms, employing local people supplying a local market. There would be no intensive production, food additives or growth promoters. Stockmen would know their animals at every stage of their lives and take them themselves to the local abattoir and then on to the local butcher. There was a quality circle of happy, healthy animals, a sustainable local economy and hardly any ‘food miles’. Those involved in every step of the food production process would know each other, their farms, their standards and their methods. Where did it all go wrong?

The Rare Breeds Survival Trust is the leading conservation charity working not only to restore Britain’s native livestock breeds to their rightful place in our countryside, but also to ensure that these breeds are at the heart of a real, traditional farming environment.
